Remember that protecting our valuable resources is everyone’s responsibility.

Before starting your building and landscaping projects, Check first that Permits are required for any land development in Crow Wing County.

·        With increased pressures on lake, river, and shoreland resources, statewide management standards that had been in effect for over two decades were no longer adequate to provide resource protection. New management standards have now been adopted by all Minnesota Counties, including Crow WingCounty on January 21, 1992.

·        Clean Lakes safe drinking water and a healthy economy are tied together and can only be assured for the future if all citizens join together to prevent degradation of ground and surface water.

·        Examples of projects which require a permit including the following:

§         Construction or remodeling buildings

§         Mobile homes

§         Travel Trailers used for sleeping accommodations that remain on property for greater that 180 days.

§         Filling or excavating in the shoreland

§         Cutting trees and brush in  a shoreland

§         Alteration of a wetland

§         Installation of septic systems

§         Mining, including sand & gravel pits

§         Alteration of a lake bed

§         Use of chemical to control aquatic plants

§         Cutting emergent aquatic vegetation (bulrush, cattails, ect..)

·        Restoration of landscapes which have been improperly altered with out either permits or meeting standards can be costly

·        Don’t hesitate to call first:

1.      Call the Crow Wing County Planning & Zoning Office If you are planning to develop any property in the entire county or if you are planning to make alterations in vegetation or to excavate in the shoreland (within 1,000 feet of the ordinary high water of a lake or 300 feet of a river) to find out what must be done initiation of  projects.

2.       Call the Crow Wing County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) for advice on controlling erosion problems, on best management practices in tree removal or on precautions to take in excavating and filling.

3.      Call Crow WingCounty Enviromental Services for water testing, recycling, lead abatement, radon, and for solving problems of hazardous waste disposal

4.      Call the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) before doing any alteration in the bed of public waters and for aquatic vegetation control. Phone (218) 828-2636
